The first stop of the 2012 Northeast Skim Tour in Charlestown RI was an excellent introduction to the caliber of competition that we can expect through the rest of the summer. The 4 man final was decided by 1.5 points between first and last place, local boys Mike Dowdell and Paul Cross ended in a dead heat with 55.5 points a piece, Noah Barmmer (winner of the best trick) finished in second with 56.5, and dark horse candidate Drew Plourd came out dropping hammers to take the victory with 57 points.
Jr men’s again was tight, Carter Young had a dominant performance early in the day but was pushed back to 4th in the finals, Ian Wright and Trevor Kane duked in out but ultimately tied for second, and Andrew Spalding managed to edge out the victory with a 3 judge margin of only 1 point over second place. Finally we were very excited to have a the lady skimmers show up to compete in our first Rhode Island event, we had 4 in the women’s division but one of the ladies left early leaving us with 3 ladies for the final heat.
Mackenzie-Kate Nagy made her first competitive appearance taking third place with good form, Natascha Shea as a Floridian transplant to the Northeast showed experience taking second, but it was local girl Paige Lacey who stood out as the victor when all was settled.
The next stop will be July 7th at Whitecrest Beach in Wellfleet MA on Cape Cod. Registrations are flooding in which makes us excited because this event has been our main event over the last 7 years and always shows competitors and spectators alike a good time.
